Otoplasty (Ear Pinning)

Dr. Drielsma performs bat ear correction through an incision behind the ear. However individual surgical requirements may require other incisions. Dr. Drielsma uses both permanent and dissolving stitches. Although possible to do under local anesthetic, otoplasty, particularly in children, is usually done as a day stay procedure under a light anesthetic. Recovery is quick and pain is minimal. Patients require a head bandage for a week. Results are excellent and lead to a boost in self-image and confidence.

When contemplating otoplasty for a child, the age depends on patient preference. Dr. Drielsma commonly performs this surgery prior to school age (under 5). However many age groups request this surgery.

  • Important points to remember before Proceeding with surgery

    • Healing continues for some time following surgery as the skin shrinks and adjusts.
    • There can be no absolute guarantee with any surgery. Remember, the realistic aim of this operation is improvement, not perfection. Don’t expect both ears to match perfectly – perfect symmetry is both unlikely and unnatural in ears.
    • In the hands of even the most experienced surgeon, a secondary operation to correct residual asymmetry or a minor irregularity may be needed subsequently.
    • You should avoid smoking and taking aspirin or aspirin-containing medications for at least three weeks before and after surgery to assist the healing process.

**Results may vary for individual to individual
